Startup Opportunity – MDR LAB Accelerator for Legal Tech Startups

MDR LAB is a startup accelerator for tech start-ups in the legal space. Open to early stage and growth technology start-ups, applications are welcome from companies at concept through to revenue-generating stage, as long as the product or service is applicable to the legal industry. The programme is rather unique for the legal tech space, and the application process is straightforward, so we suggest you hurry. Applications close on February 18th.

Important FAQs

Is MDR LAB like other accelerators?

Unlike an accelerator, MDR LAB is not simply about investment. Instead, they focus on broader, mutual benefits and giving the startups opportunities to:

  • Pilot your product with Mishcon de Reya
  • Receive mentoring from legal experts at Mishcon de Reya
  • Gain insights from subject matter experts through a top-quality education programme
  • Access funding from Mishcon de Reya and L Marks

How much will Mishcon de Reya and L Marks invest in my business?

They are looking to make early-stage investments. Each participant will receive a bespoke investment offer before joining the programme.

What information do I need to provide in my application?

They want to know about your product or service, your team and your company. Don’t hold back. The more they know the better equipped they are to make a decision.

I don’t live in the UK – can I apply?

Of course. Mishcon de Reya is a global firm and global companies are encouraged to apply. Advisors currently are from the UK, US, Canada, Asia Pacific and Israel.

Legal Tech Innovation Categories

MDR Lab is particularly interested in innovations that relate to one of the following categories:

Litigation: Lawyers have seen an explosion in the amount of information they need to manage through the litigation process. MDR LAB is looking for innovations that help lawyers make sense of and use this data in a more effective and efficient way to achieve better outcomes for clients.

Transactional Law: Clients are constantly challenging lawyers to work quicker and more cost effectively. MDR LAB wants to hear from businesses that are developing technology that could help streamline transactions. This might be through smarter document reviewing and creation, automation of processes or the application of Smart Contracts.

Cyber: Cyber risk is a key issue and cyber incidents can have a huge impact on businesses and individuals. MDR LAB is looking for technologies that can help lawyers and clients identify and manage cyber threats, secure data and ensure their systems are available when they need them most.

Real Estate: Technology is transforming every aspect of the Real Estate industry and proptech is a fast growing area. MDR LAB is looking for solutions that can assist Real Estate lawyers and their clients in investing, developing and managing Real Estate.

Business of Law: Providing the best service for clients relies on systems and infrastructure that are easy to use and efficient. From tracking the progress of cases to communicating with clients and managing costs, MDR LAB is looking for technologies that can help law firms run their businesses in a way that maintains the highest quality service for their clients.

Previous Successes

Last year, MDR LAB’s inaugural programme saw six companies chosen to spend ten weeks working alongside Mishcon de Reya’s lawyers and business operations teams to develop and trial their products – giving the firm access to cutting edge technology and giving the companies access to legal and business expertise.

Since the first MDR LAB accelerator programme completed, Mishcon de Reya has continued to develop relationships with all of the participating companies, and it has invested in two of them: Everchron (video here), developers of collaborative litigation management software; and Ping (video here), whose product automates timekeeping for lawyers and provides data analysis for law firms.
