Silicon Milkroundabout was started in 2011 by Pete Smith and Ian Hogarth. Pete and Ian, who were at Songkick at the time, were frustrated by the challenge of attracting the best talent. Instead of going to startups, these individuals were joining agencies and large corporations. Their proposed solution — host their own job fair! During the third Silicon Milkroundabout, Cristiana Camisotti joined to ramp up their activities. Silicon Milkroundabout has now grown into a team of thirteen great individuals united by the mission of creating real world events that allow tech talent to have real conversations with hiring technology teams.
In an age when smart people are more discerning than ever before, recruiting no longer solely boils down to whether or not a company wants a particular candidate but rather, whether or not a candidate wants a particular company. Teams and potential new hires want to understand whether or not they are a cultural fit. It is difficult to gage cultural fit from digital interactions and is another problem that Silicon Milkroundabout are effective at solving.
A Silicon Milkroundabout event involves companies pitching up stalls where attendees can interact with teams from these companies. Upon entry, Silicon Milkroundabout representatives give attending tech talent “skills stickers” that communicate to the hiring companies which skills they have. Attendees have the opportunity to get a feel for the companies and identify whether the team is one they could work with. The company also gets to find out whether or not the values of a potential individual aligns with that of their company. It is these initial conversations that build the foundation for tech talent finding fulfilling work.
At their first event in 2011, Silicon Milkroundabout had over 45 companies in attendance that attracted 500 developers. Innovative technology companies like Mind Candy, Songkick and Lyst were amongst those that attended. Their upcoming event on 9th & 10th May 2015 has over 200 companies registered to attend, along with 3000+ job hunters. Silicon Milkroundabout have earned the trust of many companies to give them access to highly skilled tech talent. They have also earned the reputation of being the must attend event for smart candidates looking for their next role.
